Website Hosting

When you’re running a business, the last thing you want to be is hacked. Unfortunately, this is a very real threat. Hackers can get into your website and run off with personal information of your customers or use your site to launch an attack on other websites. As a business owner, it’s important that you take steps to protect yourself and your customers.  Implementing the following seven tips to protect your website will dramatically reduce potential damage.

Use a strong password

A password is your first line of defense against hackers and cyber criminals. Your password should be strong and unique, and you should never use the same password for multiple accounts. Unfortunately, many people choose weak passwords that are easy to crack.   When creating your password, try following these simple tips:

  • Create a passwords that is at least 8 characters long
  • Include both upper and lowercase letters
  • Include numbers and symbols
  • Avoid using easily guessed words like “password” or your name
  • Change your passwords periodically

Use an SSL certificate to encrypt the data that is transmitted between your website and visitors

One of the best ways is by using an SSL certificate, which encrypts data transmissions between your website and users. This provides a significant level of protection against phishing attacks, where criminals try to steal sensitive information like credit card numbers or passwords. It also protects you from hackers trying to break into your site’s backend with brute force methods (i.e., guessing every possible password). If you’re not sure if it’s time for you to install an SSL certificate, consider that Google has now started penalizing websites with unsecured connections in search engine rankings – so this is more than just a wise move; it’s necessary!

Configure your website to block search engines from indexing sensitive information

If you have a website, it’s likely that your content is being indexed by search engines. Usually this isn’t a problem because it helps to increase your site’s visibility and traffic. However, there are instances where you don’t want indexing to happen – for example if the information on the site is sensitive or private in nature. In those cases, it can be helpful to block search engine crawlers from accessing your site altogether.

Create a backup of your site in case you ever need it

What would you do if your site went down for an extended period of time? Unfortunately, it’s not something that is unheard of. Between hacking and server crashes, there are all sorts of things that can go wrong. That’s why it’s important to have a backup plan in place. You should create a backup of your website so you can rest assured knowing that your business will be able to continue to operate even in the event of an emergency.

Keep your website up-to-date

Make sure all files are up-to-date on the server, including software patches for any vulnerabilities.  Keep up-to-date with security patches and updates from WordPress and other software providers.  Check in with your website’s settings periodically to make sure everything is configured properly and secure.

Limit the number of plugins

You know that plugins can be a lifesaver. They add all sorts of functionality to your site, and can make your life a lot easier. However, if you’re not careful, you can quickly overload your site with plugins, which can lead to some serious problems.  Are sll of them they really necessary?  Take a step back and audit the plugins you are using on your site.  You should try not to install more than 4 plugins.   This will keep your site running smoothly while still adding the features you need.

Use a WAF service

To protect against these attacks, we offer a web application firewall (WAF) that blocks known attack techniques like cross-site scripting (XSS), SQL injection or unknown zero day exploit attempts while also blocking suspicious requests when they occur too frequently on one page for an extended period time before another pattern can be seen which may indicate malicious intent

Protect your devices

It’s no secret that having up-to-date antivirus software is important for small businesses. Protecting your devices from ransomware and other malware is essential in order to keep your data safe and your business running smoothly. However, many small businesses still do not have the necessary protection in place. If you’re one of these businesses, now is the time to update your security measures. Make sure you have an updated antivirus software installed on all of your devices, including smartphones and laptops.
